Language

Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ) is a Dravidian language belonging to the Southern Dravidian branch of the Dravidian language family. It is the official and administrative language of the Indian state of Karnataka and is also spoken by communities in neighbouring states such as Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Goa, as well as among diaspora communities in the United States, United Kingdom, and the Gulf region. According to Glottolog, Kannada belongs to the Southern Dravidian group alongside Tamil, Malayalam, and Tulu. Kannada has a literary tradition spanning over a thousand years and was one of the first Indian languages to be accorded Classical Language status by the Government of India. Most speakers are bilingual in Hindi or English depending on their region and level of education.
